The former café also provided many happy memories, such as the recollection of lorry drivers bringing their own mugs in for tea or coffee, before being taken over by the chippy which would become synonymous with this part of Bagshot.īefore the mid-1980s, Jack’s was situated next to the Little Chef restaurant before it ceased trading and was later demolished. Pre-dating Jack’s was Bert's Gone Mad which occupied the site in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Burgers, chicken, pies and sausages could also be devoured from their menu. I took my youngest for a walk and it was heart-breaking to see the building being torn apart, knowing we’d never be able to visit again.”īoth the traditional cod and chips and haddock and chips were firm favourites, costing £7.40 and £8.15 respectively (as of April 2020 when they were open for takeaways during the first lockdown). “My two kids looked forward to our visits and many great memories were made as well as filling our hungry stomachs. One regular site from this part of town was the great number of bikers who congregated on the chippy by making it their regular base. One former visitor from three years ago stated how they had “just had fish, chips and mushy peas! Can honestly say one of the best I've ever had.” Another reviewer spoke in glowing terms of their quality: “Beautiful quality cod in a crispy batter and the chips were perfect-soft and fluffy inside and crispy outside.” Unfortunately, the general consensus was that in more recent years, it started to deteriorate and the quality of their food lessened. Upon entering, you were often met with an enjoyable atmosphere with a great relationship built up between staff and customers. Its convenient location to the A30 made Jack’s easy to find, and also ensured many commuters would fill up on food before reembarking on their journeys. Jack’s of Bagshot, in London Road, provided many Surrey residents with the glorious taste of this old British classic. However, one notable favourite was lost forever when it closed, and later knocked down, last year. John’s, Woking, Sea Salt in Reigate and Brotherwoods in Godalming are among the excellent offerings available to locals in need of this British delicacy. Surrey is fortunate to be the home of many great fish and chips eateries.
