The simplicity creates negative space, but it’s broken up just enough to keep it from feeling empty. The door handles are hidden and don’t interrupt the flow. There’s a total of two or three lines on the side panel. The entire idea of a grille (it’s electric after all) is encapsulated by a single rounded rectangle. Beautiful.īut it’s not just sports cars: the upcoming (at time of writing) Honda e nails it. I have to put my hand to my mouth and give it a chef’s kiss. A unified wedge shape, sinister headlights brought out by the folds in the front end, two matching side vents…It gets the point across without going overboard (as Lamborghini tends to). ![]() Especially from a company that loves its Hot-Wheels-meets-stealth-fighter approach, this is styling perfection. How about something a little more recent? True story: I shed a single, manly tear when the first photos of the Lamborghini Huracan were released. This design still works so well because it’s a sports car deconstructed to its bare essentials. ![]() A simple grille, two round headlights, two small turn signals, and a bumper bar. Outside of the clear separation between hood and headlights, the front end doesn’t have much going on either. The entire side panel has a single line in the bodywork. For starters, let’s look at the Aston Martin DB5, widely considered one of the best-looking vehicles of all-time. Nowhere is this simplistic approach more apparent than at the mountaintop of car design: sports cars. The final drawing is nothing more than a handful of simple lines – but it’s still clear it’s a drawing of a bull. But as he moved from left to right, he progressively deconstructed the bull into simpler and simpler forms. [In the beginning, Picasso’s just showing off his artistic skills. Adding more features and more lines will not necessarily make your cars prettier or sportier or more exciting. We get it in our heads that sports cars have more vents for airflow, race cars have huge spoilers and lots of sponsors, and hot rods have ridiculous blowers and flames painted on, so overkill must be underrated. The most common rookie mistake is thinking that more is better. Although these are three very different models and body styles, they all have something in common.Įxperimentation with minimalist LED lighting aside, did you figure it out?
